"april is the cruellest month" -t. s. eliot, _the waste land_

i try to keep global events out of my blog. i am not a good source for news...that's for reuters. i find myself compelled to say something about the deaths at virginia tech today. yet, upon pondering, i realize that what i have to say is silenced by the magnitude of sadness we all share.

no kidding. i was watching the news yesterday- it started out as 2 killed. i felt bad, but thought it was an isolated incident. later when I heard it going up to 20, i went omg. what's going on? then it went over 30- i was in shock- that was sad. watching the video that they played- you could hear the pops of gunfire- pop, pop, pop, pop, pop- and to know each one of those meant a person dying. i thought... all those kids- smart kids- kids who had a bright futures. professors- invaluable- the loss of life and the loss of contributors to society. why is life so frickin unfair? and it goes beyond just the folks who were killed. can you imagine how it feels to be the parents, the siblings or friends? to wonder, is my kid, my brother, my sister, my friend ok, only to find out they'll never see them again? sheesh.

i got this email from my friend william today. thought i'd share:
I am so sorry you are sad.
Tears are good. Tears are healthy. I am sending sunshine to the east coast as we speak. It will help you as you try to make sense of this crazy world.
My best advice is that you cannot, and therefore should always try to accept what doesn't make any sense and moveon as YOU make the world a better place one exchange at a time.
And remember... for every child that died yesterday... there were sooo many beautiful things that also happened in the universe that the news will never report.
A homeless man was given a meal.
Old people were saved from burning buildings.
Villages in Africa were provided with water where there was drought before.
New species of fish were discovered.
The stars and space and sun all moved in perfect unison together and blessed us all.
People made love.
Children were concieved.
They were given names by parents who will love them.

There is always more good than bad.
Good always will win.
Turn your TV off.
Go make good happen in the world right now.
That, my dear one, is the reason you are here... to plant trees under whoose (sp?) shade you will never expect to sit.
Go love others.
It will help you get through this.
:)
That is the best advice i can give you.

Reguarding the e-mail, it is good to see that students and teachers were helping injured students, even when they could have been killed next. I guess, you just move on look at the good, and learn wisely from the bad.
