icy rain and yuck pelted albermarle county today. i didn't notice much because i was chained to my computer trying to construct competitive analyses through matrices and decision trees.
hey, that sounded like a dr. seuss line.
when i did venture outside, it was to do my civic duty/privilege and vote in the presidential primary.
a very big decision. the last time i voted i waited in line for hours at a raleigh community center, surrounded by buzzing politicos and clipboard-wielding canvassers. i remember going on a run that afternoon before the vote, pointedly traveling sidewalks lining the city's busiest streets. i had drawn "VOTE" in obnoxious blue sharpie on the front and back of my t-shirt. it was the least i could do to remind auto commuters to think about their role in choosing our country's leadership.
today, in contrast, i made my way to a forlorn-looking elementary school, followed simple signs murmuring "vote", and gave my registration card to a nice woman in a cable-knit sweater. ten seconds later i was standing in the voting booth, staring at an electronic board. it was deceptively simple: push the grey button next to the name you want to nominate. press the big, square, unmistakable "cast vote" button. walk out.
in all: 90 seconds.
so simple. yet so complicated beforehand. i'd been agonizing for months now about who i would vote for. each time i thought i'd decided on one, i found a previously-unknown merit to push the other into my favor. back and forth and back and forth this continued until today when i pulled out my tie-breaker, sudden-death decision-making tool.
flip a coin.
it worked perfectly when i chose between gamma phi and alpha phi; and it worked today.
some may call me fickle. indecisive. careless.
i argue to the contrary.
in essence i am in training to be effective at decision-making, so i'd be foolish to ignore my $120,000 investment in building those skills.
today i thoroughly evaluated all i knew about the candidates. yet in the end the apples remained apples and the oranges; oranges.
(interesting that the virginia primary should occur this week, since i also have to decide on my summer internship)
when it rains, it pours.
...and slushes, too.
